The main building of the former hospital in Moision will be converted into hotel rooms and apartments for the elderly
Kyyhkylkä is expanding to the former hospital area of Moision. CEO Leila Repo wants to create a significant wellness and health tourism hub in the area.
Wellbeing365, based in Kyyhkylä, is expanding to the Moision hospital area later this year.
The hospital complex, known for its natural values, was left empty in 2023, when psychiatric services moved to new premises.
Moisio is located four kilometres from the centre of Mikkeli, Kyyhkylä a few kilometres further.
Repo says that communal living for the elderly and hotel rooms are coming to the premises of the former psychiatric hospital. According to him, financial negotiations are currently underway.
– The future financiers will be domestic investors, says Repo.
The city of Mikkeli outlined already in 2011 that hotel and wellness services will be located in the former buildings of the Moisio hospital.
Leila Repo wants to create Finland’s first major wellness and health tourism center in the Kyyhkylä–Moisio area.
The idea is to offer domestic and foreign customers services that the Kyyhkylä rehabilitation center still provides today. For example, rehabilitation for families with ADHD children and those suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.
On the other hand, there may be traditional beauty services, such as foot treatments and chocolate masks.
– For some, well-being is going to sit on Rantakafila’s Kelluva terrace for a beer, Repo inches.
According to Revo, the development of Kyyhkylä’s services also requires more accommodation capacity. Hotel rooms in the manor are filled with clients of the rehabilitation center on weekdays, and the space may not be enough for meeting guests.
– Moisioon can make a huge number of hotel rooms. The concept plan already exists, but we will go into traffic little by little.
Kyyhkylä Manor applies for corporate restructuring
Mutual Insurance Company Ilmarinen filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of January. The company has available insurance premiums of around 72,000 euros.
Leila Repo says that the company is applying for corporate restructuring. According to him, it may not even be necessary, since the development of Kyyhkylä-Moisio will receive funding.
Corporate restructuring is already underway at the Kyyhkylä rehabilitation center, which the city of Mikkeli filed for bankruptcy at the end of October.
According to the bankruptcy filing, the rehabilitation center had more than 400,000 euros in unpaid rent.
The district court of Pohjois Savo gave permission for the company reorganization in mid-January.
According to Revo, the company’s finances will be fixed by increasing the number of places for round-the-clock and community living for the elderly. There are currently 35 of them in total.
Kyyhkylä Oy has applied to the Regional Administration Office for permission to convert short-term housing for the elderly into long-term housing.
In total, the number of places would increase from 60 to 89, which would triple the turnover.
According to Revo, the company also plans to increase sales of rehabilitation services and acquire new customer groups.
“There are not enough places”
The price of 24/7 pigeon care follows the ceiling price set by the Etelä-Savo welfare region. The welfare district issues a service voucher to customers.
Repo believes that there is a demand for places.
– We have been told that care for the elderly will grow significantly in the next few years, and there are not enough places.
Kyyhkylä Oy also heals its finances by cutting unnecessary premises and expenses.
According to Revo, the company is negotiating with the city about changing the rental basis.
– Now we pay rent on a square meter basis. The building has a lot of wasted space, and the rent is therefore disproportionately high.
Revo also has in his mind that he would also acquire Kyyhkylä’s buildings. It would make it possible, for example, to carry out necessary renovations.
