British actress Joan Plowright dies aged 95
In her obituaries, Joan Plowright has been praised for her spectacular stage career with her husband Laurence Olivier and for her film career after his passing.
Plowright died at the age of 95 in Denville, surrounded by his family.
Joan Plowright was one of the great British actresses of her generation. Much of her life’s work took place on the theatre stage, often with her husband. After the death of Laurence Olivier in 1989, she turned more to film roles.
And Hollywood had a use for him.
In 1993, he won two Golden Globe Awards; one from *Lovely April* and the other from the TV series *Stalin*.
Plowright uttered the documentary’s most memorable words when recalling how his American agent was mulling over the role as the actor slowed down as his eyesight began to deteriorate.
According to the agent, Plowright could find work in Hollywood if he wanted to with his poor eyesight.
– We’re looking for a nice, small supporting role for you, which Judi Dench hasn’t nailed down yet, Plowright said the agent said.
The documentary film can be viewed at Yle Areena until June.
In the same year, Plowright won a Tony Award for the play *A Taste of Honey*. Alongside her husband, she acted in Anton Chekhov’s play *Uncle Vanya*.
Even after death, Plowright considered the role of Joan of Arc to be his favorite.
– It is the dream role of all young women. I loved playing it, but actually the role required a lot of work, Plowright told the BBC in 2018.
