Metso had a staring contest with the police in the yard of a shopping centre – a bird that has been in Loimaa for a couple of months wonders

A wild boar has been spotted behaving aggressively in the yard of a petrol station in Loimaa. Recently, roe deer have also been seen in Kokkola and Pori.

More grouse have sought human proximity in different parts of Finland recently.

Last week in Kokkola, a wild boar came into the yards and caused fear. The most recent case is in Loimaa, where a wild boar has been wondering around the town centre for a couple of months.

Last spring in Pori, a grumpy capercaillie took an interest in walkers.

– This is not quite normal, Penttinen reflects.

Penttinen thinks that the fragmentation of the forests has led to the wildcats looking for new areas. This is how they sometimes end up in yards.

However, Karhumäki notes that there can be other reasons and it is not known exactly what causes the forest to go into people’s yards. One reason may be that the birds are young individuals who, out of curiosity, explore the environment.

– They find their place and usually disappear by themselves.

According to Karhumäki, the number of forests coming into the yards and people’s eyes seems to have increased, even according to newspaper data, although there is no accurate data from decades ago. Still, according to him, backyard forests are exceptional cases.

Perniö resident Juhani Karhumäki, who rings disturbed forests, lies in the forest and looks at the forest. Metso calmly looks back. In the second picture of Kuvalola, Karhumäki is ringing the coop.
Juhani Karhumäki has been ringing stalking foxes and bobcats since 1993.

According to his own ringing statistics, since 1993, he has encountered and ringed about one nuisance forest a year. There are indeed years in between without any tires. In 2021, there were 6 rings of disturbed forests.

Cockfight at a petrol station and a staring contest with the police

For the first time, a wild boar in Loimaa was seen in the yard of a gas station near Ysitie at the end of November and it behaved aggressively. The police helped the forest safely across Ysitie, after which it disappeared.

Observations have been made of Metso from time to time since then. At Christmas, for example, it keköt in the backyard of the house on the bird board.

A wild boar was sitting in Minna Mäkilä’s yard on Christmas Eve.

The metso was last seen on Sunday near the shopping center, when it ended up in a staring contest with a police patrol.

Hanna Penttinen was involved in catching the bird, but it flew away to the roof of the building.

According to Penttinen, who has been after Metso several times, they have received no new reports about the bird since Sunday.

Pictures of the bird have been shared on Facebook during its stay in Loimaa. Some people have been worried about the animal’s condition, because in some videos it has a limp on its leg. Based on Sunday’s encounter, Penttinen thinks the bird is fine because it flew away.

– It flies, eats and poops. It seems to have been well nourished.

In May 2024, the grumpy old fox was interested in Tero Tuome and Maija Erkolahde from Pori in Kuuminainenai, Pori.

The shy bird

Loimaa’s wild boar was aggressive in the yard of the gas station in November, but since then, according to observations, it has not been threatening.

The situation may change at the time of playing in the spring.

– We are looking forward to spring, Hanna Penttinen states.

According to Juhani Karhumäki, the wildebeest is a timid bird, even though we often write about crowing wildebeests. Of course, the animal can become a nuisance, and if it wants to, the bird will beat its wings quite hard.

Many animals, such as foxes and hawks, have adapted to cities and the proximity of people. Pheasants may also walk along the village track. Could the Metso adapt to backyards?

– That is quite far-fetched, says Karhumäki.

If there are any further observations of the Loimaa Metso, for example by the police, the volunteers of the animal protection association will try to move it away from people. You are not allowed to go hunting the wild boar itself.
