The movie version of Tampere Työväen Teatter’s critically acclaimed rock musical Hamlet takes the viewer into the middle of the events on stage.

Tampere Työväen Teatter’s rock musical Hamlet is making a comeback, this time to television. The unique television premiere is on December 3 on YLE Theme.

Hamlet, which premiered at TTT in the fall of 2020, was a critical success, which was considered an international top-level success.

A musical as a TV movie is a very rare treat. In the authors’ memory, there is no domestic musical that has been seen on television, let alone as a film.

The film recording was made under the terms of television

Director Otso Kautto is still excited about the big project. With the help of the camera, the viewer gets close to the actor and the events on the stage, opening a new perspective even for those who saw the musical in the theater.

– Although the means are different, the recording feels the same as an actual theater performance, says Kautto.

The musical was first filmed with multi-camera technology for three performances with the audience. The dramatic scenes and close-ups necessary in the film were built during separate shooting days. At the same time, some of the musical’s songs were edited closer to rock videos.

– The film version contains more cuts than in a film of this length usually, says Kautto. Thanks to the close-ups, the actor’s work is conveyed to the viewer from a completely new perspective.

The use of the camera on stage is here to stay

Otso Kautto believes that modern technology with all its spices will in the future be an even clearer part of what theater does. The teachings of the rock musical Hamlet are easy to refine for the stage.

– Camera technology opens up a completely new world for theater makers, Kautto envisions. Many small stages could easily be built into a studio, to record the entire performance or as part of stage art.

Videos also work in marketing, especially if the target is the international market. Kautto believes that Rock-Hamlet could very well be an export product. After all, it is a new interpretation of one of the most famous performances in the theater world.

Tampere Työväen Teatter’s rock musical Hamlet has its television premiere on December 3. With YLE Theme. The film can be viewed at Yle Areena until 2 December 2023.
