According to BirdLife Finland’s overview of the bird situation, the showy duck, the great grebe, spends its time on the large lakes of southern Finland at this time of year.
More than 7,000 great hornbills have been observed in Asikkala, informs BirdLife Suomi in its overview of the bird situation. The duck bird, which breeds all over Finland, moves to larger lakes to fish when the smaller lakes freeze over.
In Asikkala’s Kajaanselkä, big skunks have gathered in several flocks, which are typically seen on fishy lakes in November. In addition, tens of silkworms have been seen on the lakes of southern Finland, with a maximum of 25 individuals in Lahti’s Enonselä.
Great ospreys are known to spend the winter in the frozen waters of the southern coast. Some winter in Åland and the rest further away in the southern parts of the Baltic Sea and around the North Sea.
According to BirdLife Finland, only a small number of delayed migratory birds have been observed. The most unusual sightings are the black-throated sparrow and the red sparrow.
Rarities of the last few days in other parts of Finland include, among others, the gray-eared alok and the southern gray alok in Turku, the tulipää hippias in Hanko and Raasepori. According to BirdLife’s announcement, the Little Wagtails have been seen in six different places.
