Analysis: Artists’ retirement announcements still have the flavor of funding

Several Finnish artists such as Vesala, Antti Tuisku and Chisu have talked about either taking a break or ending their career this year.

For example, Antti Tuisku’s spring and summer concerts are sold as a farewell, even though the artist’s future is open, writes music journalist Ville Vedenpää.

Several of Finland’s number one artists have said this year that they will end their careers, take a break, or something vague in between.

Chisu, who has been awarded with numerous Emmas, started nine consecutive gigs at Helsinki’s Tavastia on Sunday. With the farewell gigs called Freeze Chisu, he is putting his current artist career on hold.

In an interview with Yle in the spring, the singer told what this means. He no longer feels that he can express himself as the Chisu he is used to being known as.

The musician is not talking about actually quitting, but about putting the artist named Chisu on the shelf for years so he can focus on other music projects. However, the back door is open, so Chisu can still make a comeback one day.

Chisu visited the Arto Nyberg program last Sunday. You can watch the interview below.

Until a few years ago, it was typical for an artist to be announced as ending his career or going on an indefinite hiatus. Tickets were sold for the \”last\” gigs, and return gigs were marketed after at least a couple of years. The time usually needed to make a new record had passed during the break.

Nowadays, terminations and breaks are told in more careful wording. Haloo Helsinki announced in 2018 that it would take a two and a half year hiatus. The band returned to the concert stages as agreed.

Vesala said this year that he will take a break for several years to focus on other projects. The multi-talented person has passions to do, for example, the work of a screenwriter or an actor, so the decision is not surprising.

In both cases, a clear and fair game.

The most confusing case, however, is Antti Tuisku. After the concerts at the Olympic Stadium in August, Helsingin Sanomat reported that the singer will end his career. Moments after the publication of the article, however, the press release published by the record company talked about going on a long hiatus.

Still, the spring arena tour has been sold as a farewell. This summer’s Ruisrock gig has been marketed as the end of his career, although the same announcement says: \”the artist is withdrawing from the concert stages and sealing his career as an artist for the time being.\”

For now.

However, at regular intervals, people speculate when Cheek will make a comeback. It has already become a flap. Will the professional breaker Antti Tuiskus be like that too?
