The number of sellers varies from year to year. In peak seasons, moles are also a major cause of damage, for example to nursery stock.
─ In western Finland, the peak of the myrmidon peak was in autumn 2021, and populations have declined since then. Moles are also scarce in south-east Finland and most of Forest Lapland,” says Otso Huitu.
In the mole belt from Oulu to eastern Finland, seedling damage is expected in the early winter. Especially in Kainuu, moles are abundant. Both field and forest voles are found in the area. However, according to Luke’s estimates, the number of moles in this peak area is likely to collapse during the coming winter.
However, moles may still be present in the field next spring and early summer, but numbers are expected to decline until spring next year.
─ In western Finland, the mole peak was in the fall of 2021, and populations have decreased since then. There are also few voles in South-Eastern Finland and most of Metsä-Lapland, says leading researcher Otso Huitu from Luke.
