The extension covers just over 2,400 hectares. It will bring new areas under protection and provide new opportunities for recreational use of the area.
The proposal to extend the Tiilikkajärvi National Park in Rautavaara is now before Parliament. The Government has submitted a draft Government bill for the extension of the national park, which covers 2,441 hectares.
Tiilikkajärvi National Park, located in the municipalities of Rautavaara and Sotkamo, currently covers an area of 3,450 hectares. The extension area includes, among other things, old natural forest and valuable bogs. Almost 1300 hectares of forestry land will be protected.
The extension also aims to promote recreational use between the existing area of the national park, the Pumpkin Church forests and the Youth Centre Metsäkartano.
