Kouvola’s True Finns propose to locate a new theatre in Kuusankoski.

The Perussuomalaiset council group believes that the city of Kouvola cannot afford to build a new cultural quarter in the city centre. Instead, the proposal is to expand the Kuusankoskitalo for professional theatre.

The True Finns believe that the Kuusankoskitalo site on the banks of the Kymijoki River would be a natural location for a so-called cultural quarter. Kuusankoskitalo currently houses a library, cinema and amateur theatre, among other things.

There have been plans to create a cultural quarter in Kouvola, where the main library, the Poikilo museums and the theater would be located in a common block on Salpausselänkatu.

The city’s sports and culture board outlined in October that the previous plan for a joint cultural block for the theater, museum and civic college is too expensive, as construction costs have risen significantly over the past year.

The cultural quarter will be decided by the city council in due course.
